The brutal mockery of the class conflict with the proverbial vomit and poop won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday, the second time Swedish director Ruben Ostlund has won the award.
Triangle of Sadness ranks Ostlund in a select group of two-time Cannes Grand Prix winners. Palme first picked up in 2017 for The Square.
The film explores notions of beauty and privileges and sends two models on a luxury cruise – just to stay stranded on a deserted island with several employees and billionaire visitors. The farmer has been shown to have the best security skills and social structures have been strengthened. Ostlund, 48, now firmly established as the king of cinema, took a scalpel of civic beauty. This time, he turned his gaze to the models and ultra-rich people, who found that their situation had suddenly worsened when the disaster hit the cruise ship.
The long use of projectiles and violent manure on the ship became part of the festival soon after its premiere last week, making the audience laugh or green.
Ostlund said at the award that he wanted the audience to have fun, but “they also asked questions, came to the screening and discussed.”
