Early Life

In Dallas, Texas, Robert Matthew Van Winkle, better known as Vanilla Ice, was born on October 31, 1967. When he was born, his mother was married to Van Winkle. Van Winkle’s mother divorced that man when he was four years old. He was never introduced to his biological father. Van Winkle spent his youth going back and forth between Dallas and Miami, where his stepfather worked after his mother remarried a car dealer. Van Winkle began breaking dance at the age of 13 and became involved in the early hip-hop culture.
Because he was the only white boy breakdancing, his pals gave him the moniker Vanilla Ice. He didn’t care for the moniker, but it stayed. The indie record label Ichiban Records released “Play That Funky Music” as the A-side and “Ice Ice Baby” as the B-side of the single in 1989. A DJ on a Georgia radio station accidentally played “Ice Ice Baby” when he meant to play “Play That Funky Music.” “Ice Ice Baby” was a huge hit with the audience.
