Early Life
Tory Lanez was born Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson in Brampton, Ontario, Canada, on July 27, 1992. Tory’s father, Sonstar, is Bajan, and his mother, Luella, was from Curaçao and died when Tory was 11 years old from a rare ailment. Lanez expressed his grief at his mother’s passing by saying, “I was acting badly at the time because I didn’t know how to express myself. Music provided me with a way to express myself and channel my rage.”
Lanez’s family moved to Montreal when he was four or five years old, and subsequently to Miami, Florida. Sonstar worked as a missionary and ordained pastor after Luella died, thus the family traveled around a lot. After remarrying, Sonstar relocated his family to Atlanta, Georgia. Tory’s buddy Hakeem gave him the moniker “Lanez” because he “liked chasing thrills and sprinting around the streets.”
Tory moved home with a relative in Queens, New York, in 2006 owing to behavioral difficulties, and then to his grandmother in Toronto, but she refused to care for him. “I ended up relocating downtown with these three men who I didn’t really know,” Lanez told “XXL” magazine. I was basically fighting them from the age of 15 to 18. I was fighting on a daily basis, and these were older men.
It was a case of each guy for himself. “Having to fend for me and being in a circumstance where you don’t have a father, grandmother, or mother to aid you is what made me a man.” He started rapping a few years after his mother died, and dubbed himself “Notorious” after Notorious B.I.G. After dropping out of school at the age of 16, he began playing at outdoor festivals under the moniker “Tory Lanez.”
Career
Lanez released the mixtape “T.L 2 T.O” in 2009, and rapper Sean Kingston invited Tory to meet with him in early 2010 after seeing a video of him freestyling. Lanez signed with Kingston’s record company, Time is Money Entertainment, in 2011 and released four mixtapes that year: “Playing for Keeps,” “Just Landed,” “One Verse One Hearse,” and “Mr. 1 Verse Killah.”
Lanez continued to produce mixtapes, including “Chixtape” (2011), “Sincerely Tory” (2012), “Conflicts of My Soul: The 416 Story” (2013), and “Lost Cause” (2014). (2014). On August 19, 2016, Interscope Records/Mad Love Records released his debut studio album, “I Told You.” The smash songs “Say It” (3x Platinum) and “Luv” (4x Platinum) were featured on the Gold album, which debuted at #1 on the “Billboard” Top Rap Albums list and #4 on the “Billboard” 200 charts (2x Platinum).
“Memories Don’t Die,” Tory’s follow-up album debuted at #1 on the Canadian Albums List and #3 on the “Billboard” 200 charts in 2018. His following two albums, “Love Me Now?” (released in 2018) and “Chixtape 5” (released in 2019), both charted at #1 on the Top Rap Albums list and made the top 10 on the “Billboard” 200, Canadian Albums Chart, and UK Hip Hop and R&B Albums Chart.
On the Top Rap Albums and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts, the album peaked at #4. Lanez has appeared on a number of other artists’ songs, including G-“Drifting” Eazy’s (2015), Busta Rhymes’ “Girlfriend” (2017), and T-“Getcha Pain’s Roll On” (2017). (2019). Jeezy, Meek Mill, Fifth Harmony, and Alicia Keys have all acknowledged him as a lyricist on their songs.
Personal Life
Lanez was arrested in July 2020 after a house party became violent. Police discovered a hidden firearm in his car and detained him. Megan Thee Stallion, another rapper, was in the car as well, but she had a foot injury. Megan subsequently disclosed that the injury was actually a gunshot wound and that Tory was the shooter, despite early reports that it was caused by shattered glass.
In October 2020, Lanez was charged with three felonies, including assault with a semiautomatic weapon, and a protection order was imposed against him, banning him from contacting Megan or approaching her within 100 feet. Tory’s bail was raised from $190,000 to $250,000 when he breached the protection order in August 2023. Lanez has had conflicts with Drake, Jacquees, and Joyner Lucas, among others. Tory and Jacquees went on tour together after their little dispute was resolved. Kai Lanez, Lanez’s son, was born in April 2017.

Lanez received a Grammy nomination for “Luv” in 2017 for Best R&B Song. He has been nominated for many Juno Awards, winning Rap Recording of the Year in 2017 and “Love Me Now?” in 2019, as well as R&B/Soul Recording of the Year in 2020 for “Feel It Too.”
Tory was nominated for a Much Music Video Award for Best Hip Hop Video in 2015 for “Henny in Hand,” and he was nominated for an NAACP Image Award for Best New Artist in 2019 for “Henny in Hand.” BET Awards (Best New Artist), BET Hip Hop Awards (Best New Hip Hop Artist), MOBO Awards (Best International Act), and Soul Train Music Awards (Best New Artist) nominated him in 2016, and he was nominated for a BET Hip Hop Award for Best International Flow in 2019.
