Sandra Bullock was born in Virginia on July 26, 1964, to John W Bullock, a US Army officer who also works as a part-time voice instructor, and Helga Mathilde Meyer, a teacher and opera singer. She held dual citizenship (American – German) until she was 18 years old, as neither of her parents was of American heritage. She just had American citizenship in 2009.

Sandra was raised in Germany and Vienna and spoke German fluently. Her parents are of German descent. She received her education at the Nuremberg Waldorf School, where she participated in dance and children’s opera.

Sandra attended Washington-Lee High School and East Carolina University for college. She began acting in theatre productions here and won a BFA degree. After graduation, she traveled to Manhattan, New York, and worked as a waitress, coat checker, and bartender while auditioning for parts.

After graduation, Bullock relocated to New York City to pursue a career in acting, where she worked, took acting lessons, and auditioned for roles on stage and in student films. She supported herself by working as a bartender, cocktail server, and coat checker while auditioning for numerous parts. She also studied acting under Sanford Meisner.

Bullock continued to work in tiny parts after relocating to Los Angeles. After seeing her in an Off-Broadway production, director Alan J. Levi offered her a role in the 1989 made-for-TV film Bionic Showdown: The Six Million Dollar Man and the Bionic Woman.

This gave her the exposure to win small roles in several modest films (including the NBC television adaptation of Working Girl in 1990) before landing a significant role in Demolition Man in 1993, opposite Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes.

She also featured as a computer programmer in the 1995 film The Net, in which she discovers a conspiracy. Critics praised her performance, and The Net grossed $110.6 million in the United States. Bullock reprised her role in Speed 2: Cruise Control in 1997. She later expressed sorrow for creating the sequel.

Bullock produced and acted in the film Hope Floats, which grossed $81.4 million in 1998. In the same year, she co-starred in Practical Magic alongside Nicole Kidman, which, while now considered a cult masterpiece by some, bombed at the box office.
