Early Life

Penn Dayton Badgley was born in Baltimore, Maryland, to Duff and Lynne Murphy Badgley on November 1, 1986. His father was a carpenter, a home builder, a newspaper writer, and a Green Party candidate for governor of Washington in 2008.
Badgley spent much of his youth at Woodlake, Virginia, and Woolridge Elementary School in Seattle, Washington. In his senior year, he transferred to Charles Wright Academy in Tacoma, Washington, from St. Christopher’s School.
Badgley was a member of the Seattle Children’s Theatre and the Monroe, Washington-based Pine Nut Players community theater as a teenager. He went on to provide voice-overs for children’s radio stations later on.
His parents split when he was 12, and he and his mother went to California. He took a competency exam and enrolled at Santa Monica College, eventually transferring to Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon, to continue his degree.
