Michelle Rodriguez, or Mayte Michelle Rodriguez, was born in San Antonio, Texas, on July 12, 1978. Carmen Milady Rodriguez (née Pared Espinal), her mother, is Dominican, and Rafael Rodriguez, her father, is Puerto Rican. 

Rodriguez and her mother relocated to the Dominican Republic when she was eight years old and stayed there for three years. Rodriguez subsequently relocated to Puerto Rico, where he spent the next six years. She returned to the United States when she was seventeen years old and resided in Jersey City, New Jersey. She struggled and eventually dropped out of high school, subsequently receiving her GED. She has 10 siblings and half-siblings in all.


Rodriguez began her acting career in the low-budget indie film “Girlfight,” which was released in 2000. She had seen an ad for an open casting call for the film and decided to go. She eventually triumphed over 350 other applications to get the starring part. Her performance was well-received in the indie cinema community, earning her awards from the National Board of Review, the Independent Spirit Awards, and the Gotham Awards. She was detained for the second time on December 1, 2005, for driving under the influence. For this offense, she was sentenced to five days in prison. She was sentenced to 60 days in prison for violating her probation in Hawaii but owing to congestion, she was released the same day she arrived.
