Caine found later in life, after his mother died, that he had an older half-brother named David who suffered from severe epilepsy and had spent his whole life in a mental institution. The child’s existence had been kept a secret from the mother’s whole family.
Due to the destruction of many homes in London during the Blitz in 1940-1941, his father was called away during WWII and the family moved into a prefabricated house when he returned. The family resided for eighteen years at the house.
Caine started performing in school plays when he was ten years old. He was a bright student who received a scholarship at Hackney Downs School, where he stayed until moving to Wilson’s Grammar School in Camberwell.
He dropped out of school at the age of 16 after finishing his six subjects and worked as a file clerk and courier for a short time. He served in the Royal Fusiliers of the British Army from 1952 to 1954, completing his national service, which was mandatory at the time. During the Korean War, he was stationed in West Germany before being summoned to military duty.
At the age of 20, Caine began his acting career as an assistant stage manager at the Carfax Electric Theatre, where he also performed walk-on parts on occasion. During this time, he went by the stage name “Michael White.” He played Hindley in a theater version of “Wuthering Heights” in 1953, and he also spent a year with the Lowestoft Repertory Company, where he featured in nine plays.
Caine shared an apartment with fellow actor Terence Stamp and made friends with actor Peter O’Toole, taking up O’Toole’s role in “The Long and the Short and the Tall” after O’Toole left to work on “Lawrence of Arabia.” In the mid-1950s, he began acting on television and in films, and he continued to work consistently over the next decade.
In 1963, Caine got his big break when he was cast in the play “Next Time I’ll Sing To You.” A fellow actor, Stanley Baker, paid him a visit backstage and introduced him to film director Cy Endfield. Despite having previously cast actor James Booth in his picture “Zulu,” Endfield decided to cast Caine. He was propelled into the limelight as a result of this picture. In 1965, he played spy Harry Palmer in “The Ipcress File,” and in 1966, he played the lead role in “Alfie.” From 1996 through 1995, he returned to the character of Palmer in four more espionage flicks.
In 1969, he starred as the leader of a Cockney crime gang in “The Italian Job,” which garnered him international acclaim and remains one of his most well-known performances. Throughout the 1970s, Caine appeared alongside Sean Connery in a number of films, including “Get Carter,” “Sleuth,” and “The Man Who Would Be King.” He also starred in the Academy Award-winning film “California Suite” in 1978.
Caine’s career grew gradually over the following few decades, and he played both tragic and humorous parts. “Educating Rita,” “Miss Congeniality,” “Secondhand Lions,” “The Cider House Rules,” “Children of Men,” “The Dark Knight Trilogy,” “The Prestige,” and “Interstellar,” among many others, are among his most successful films.
Personal Life & Relationships

After seeing Baksh in a Maxwell House coffee ad, Caine and Baksh began dating. She agreed to see him after he called her for ten days straight. They married in 1973 and had a daughter named Natasha together. They live in the United Kingdom and the United States, respectively.
Caine has had a number of high-profile pals throughout his life among which John Lennon, Sean Connery, and Roger Moore are few.
