Early Life

Born as Lindsey Caroline Kildow to Linda Anne and Alan Lee Kildow on October 18, 1984, Vonn grew up in the Twin Cities metropolitan area in Burnsville, Minnesota.  She started skiing at the age of two and soon got the opportunity to hone her skill skills under the guidance of renowned coach Erich Sailor at Burnsville’s Buck Hill. Her father also, had won a national junior title before a knee injury at 18 and pushed her very hard to pursue a career as a professional Ski-racer. She met her role model Picabo Street when she was nine years old. Street, impressed by her skills, later mentored Vonn in skiing.

Vonn has two sisters named Laura and Karin Kildow and two brothers, Reed and Dylan Kildow. She obtained her education from the University of Missouri High School via an online distance study program. Vonn is fluent in German in addition to English.

Lindsey Vonn won her first international championship at the age of 15 when she became the first American female to take home the first place trophy at Italy’s Trofeo Topolino. She climbed the ranks of the U.S. Ski Team and made her World Cup debut at age 16 in 2000 in Park City, Utah.

She made her Olympic debut in 2002 at the age of 17 when she raced in both the slalom and combined competitions in Salt Lake City. Similarly, she won a silver medal in downhill at the Junior World Championships in Puy-Saint-Vincent, France, in March 2003. The following year, she climbed onto the World Cup podium for the first time when she finished third in downhill in January 2004 at Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. Over the next two months, she captured five more podiums.

In 2006, Vonn competed in the second Winter Olympics held in Italy, on February 13, 2006. The teenage skier set the second-best time in the first practice run but crashed in the second training run and had to be evacuated by helicopter to Turin, where she was hospitalized overnight. Despite the injury and severe pain, Vonn returned to the competition two days later. She competed and finished eighth. Her courage won her the U.S. Olympic Spirit Award.

She set a new American record for the most World Cup downhill victories with ten in Switzerland on March 8 of that year.

At the Vancouver Olympic Games 2010, Lindsey won a gold medal in the downhill discipline beating longtime rival Julie Mancuso by 0.56 seconds and becoming the first American woman to win gold in downhill.
