Early Life

Keith Urban was born on October 23, 1967, in Whangarei, New Zealand, to Marianne and Robert Bob Urban. The singer’s father was a convenience store proprietor. Sue McCarthy, a music teacher, was his mentor. Urban participated in local theatre as an actor in addition to signing. Mark Knopfler and Lindsey Buckingham, two rock musicians, influenced him.

Career

Urban debuted on the Australian talent competition “New Faces” in 1983. Throughout the rest of the 1980s, he maintained his presence in the Australian country music scene by appearing on television shows such as “The Reg Lindsay Country Homestead TV program” and “Mike McClellan’s Music Program,” as well as performing at venues such as the Northern Suburbs Country Music Club in Bald Hills.

Keith Urban signed a record deal with EMI Australia in 1990. In 1991, he launched his self-titled first album “Keith Urban,” and between 1993 and 1994, he toured as Slim Dusty’s backing act. His first visit at the Grand Ole Opry was as a support act for Dusty Springfield. Urban relocated to Nashville, Tennessee in 1992. Urban started co-writing songs with Vernon Rust, including Toby Keith’s “Jesus Gets Jealous of Santa Claus” (1995), 4 Runner’s “That Was Him (This Is Now)” (1996), and the Raybon Brothers’ “Tangled Up in Love” (1997). He then released his self-titled debut album in the United States in 1999. His single “Your Everything” reached No. 4 on the US country charts, marking him the first male New Zealand musician to do so. The single “But for the Grace of God,” from the album’s follow-up, became his first No. 1 success. Urban earned the Top New Male Vocalist Award at the 2001 Academy of Country Music Awards, as well as the Horizon Award at the 2001 Country Music Association Awards.

In 2002, he released his second American album, “Golden Road.” Urban produced seven of the album’s thirteen songs on his own and co-produced the remaining six with Dann Huff. The album’s first hit, “Somebody Like You,” spent six weeks at the top of the charts, and the fourth single, “You’ll Think of Me,” earned him a Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance in 2005. “Golden Road” was certified triple platinum in September 2015, with 3 million copies sold. Urban made his debut in front of European audiences when he was supporting Bryan Adams on his  Ireland and UK.

“Defying Gravity” (2009), “Get Closer” (2010), “Fuse” (2013), “Ripcord” (2016), and “Graffiti U” is Urban’s other albums (2018). Urban’s guest appearances on major singles include “Start a Band” (2008), a duet with Brad Paisley; “Blue Sky” with Emily West; Tim McGraw’s single “Highway Don’t Care” (2013), which features Urban playing guitar; and “Raise ‘Em Up,” a 2015 duet with Eric Church.

He met Australian actress Nicole Kidman at G’Day LA, a Hollywood event promoting Australia, in January 2005. Six months later, they started dating and married in June 2006. Sunday Rose (born in 2008) and Faith Margaret (born in 2010) are their two kids (born 2010).

Urban has a history of drug and alcohol problems. He used cocaine extensively while living in Nashville in the 1990s. In 1998, he checked himself into Cumberland Heights, a Nashville treatment facility. In 2006, he went to the Betty Ford Center in California for his second stint in recovery.

Urban sued a New Jersey painter with the same name, Keith Urban, who owned the website KeithUrban.com, in 2007 to acquire the domain name. The painter counter-sued and the case was ultimately resolved in the painter’s favor.
