Early Life
She was born in Heber Springs, a city in Arkansas. When she was a junior in high school, she met Johnnie B. Hunt and four years later they married. She went to the Conway’s University of Central Arkansas. She and J. B. had been married for 55 years and had two children and seven grandkids.
Carrer
In Stuttgart, Arkansas, the J. B. Hunt Firm, a rice hull packing company, opened its doors in 1962. Johnelle worked part-time to assist her husband with his new venture. She found herself working more and more as the firm developed, assisting with communications, financial statements, and bookkeeping. She quickly progressed to full-time employment. With five trucks and seven trailers, the couple co-founded J.B. Hunt Transport in 1969. Its success is a result of the Hunts’ hard work and entrepreneurial drive. J.B. Hunt Transport is one of the major transportation logistics companies in the United States, offering services such as Intermodal, Dedicated, Truckload, LTL, Final Mile, Refrigerated, Flatbed, and Expedited. She worked as a credit manager and held the post of Corporate Secretary on the board of directors until 2008. Johnelle was acknowledged as an active and essential partner contributing to the company’s development and success when she retired from the Board of Directors in 2008.
Johnelle Hunt now serves on the Advisory Board of The Harvey and Bernice Jones Eye Institute. She is the Chairman of the United Way Alexis de Tocqueville Society for Washington County, as well as a member of the Susan G. Komen Ozark Affiliate’s inaugural Executive Board. She took the job of Campaign Treasurer for the University of Arkansas’ Leadership Team’s Campaign for the 21st Century, a significant fundraising campaign that collected over one billion dollars, in May of 2000. Mrs. Hunt sat on the Executive Committee of the Advisory Board created after the Campaign for the Twenty-First Century. She served on the University’s Campaign Arkansas Steering Committee as Co-Chair in 2013 and continues to do so. Since 2003, she has been on the Board of Directors of The Beau Foundation, which supports prenatal care in Northwest Arkansas. She was previously a member of the UAMS Foundation Board of Directors.
Mrs. Hunt has been highly involved in initiatives produced and managed by her firm, Hunt Ventures, since her husband’s death in December 2006. Pinnacle Hills, a more than 700-acre project in western Rogers with approximately 1.4 million square feet of retail/restaurants, 960,000 square feet of Class A office space, and an additional 238,000 square feet of offices and retail under construction, was conceived and developed by the group. Northwest Arkansas Quarries, Haskell (Oklahoma) Sand and Gravel, Central Mortar and Grout (Muskogee, Oklahoma), J.B. Hunt Gas and Oil Drilling (Midland, Texas), and a rock quarry project in Honduras, Central America are among the numerous continuing projects and enterprises founded by Mr. Hunt.
Johnelle Hunt also designed and built Pinnacle Memorial Gardens, Northwest Arkansas’ newest cemetery, as well as the 3000 square foot Hunt Chapel.
J. B. Hunt now employs over 10,000 vehicles, 70,000 containers/trailers, and 11,000 drivers, but Johnelle continues to visit with as many as she can. “I’m really concerned about the people. It’s become so big now, but I still enjoy going around and seeing everyone. One of my favorite things to do is hang out with the drivers. When a driver reaches a milestone distance of 100,000 miles, we throw a large party for them.”
Personal Life
Johnelle has two children who live in Fayetteville, Arkansas. In the year 2008, she stepped out from the board then Her Son Bryan hunt become the board of J.B Hunt Transport Services.
