His mother was an actress and singer who had a successful career as part of The Sunshine Sisters, a radio vocal group before becoming a highschool drama and English teacher.
Travolta was brought up in an Irish-American neighborhood in Englewood, New Jersey alongside his five siblings Joey, Ellen, Ann, Margaret, and Sam. All his brothers and sisters were inspired by their mother’s love for theatre and became actors. Travolta attended Dwight Morrow High School, but dropped out in 1971 at the age of 17.
Career
John Travolta dropped out of high school in 1971 andmoved to New York City, where he landed a role on Broadway in the show Over Here! and a touring cast of the musical Grease. Then he relocated to Los Angeles to seek oppurtunities to further his career as ana actor. His first significant screen role was in the 1976 horror film Carrie. Around the same time he landed the role of Vinnie Barbarino in ABC’s television sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter (1975-79) which gained him immense popularity.
Over the next few years during the 1970s and into the early 1980s, Travolta enjoyed a great amount of success both on and off screen. He released his hit single “Let Her In” that reached number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in July 1976. He also starred in the television movie The Boy in the Plastic Bubble and two of his most memorable films Saturday Night Fever (1977) and Grease (1978). Both these fims helped him acquire international stardom. For his role in Saturday Night Fever, Travolta received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, one of the youngest to ever achieve this level of recognition at the age of 24. The success continued with Urban Cowboy (1980) which became a craze across the whole nation.

Unfortunately Travolta’s success came to a halt owing to series of flops that sidelined Travolta’s career. His films Two of a Kind (1983) and Perfect (1985) were commercial and critical failures, and although Staying Alive, the 1983 sequel to Saturday Night Fever, was a commercial success grosseing over $65 million, it failed to impress the critics.
Despite these setbacks, Travolta made a triumphant return in 1989 with Look Who’s Talking, which grossed $297 million—his most successful film after Grease. It was followed by two sequels Look Who’s Talking Too (1990) and Look Who’s Talking Now (1993). It was with Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction (1994) that Travolta cemented his status as an A-List actor. He played the role of Vincent Vega in the film which earned him another Academy Award nomination. It was followed by a series of notably successful films including Get Shorty (1995), White Man’s Burden (1995), Michael (1996), Phenomenon (1996), Broken Arrow (1996), Face/Off (1997), A Civil Action (1998), Primary Colors (1998) and The General’s Daughter (1999).

Ron Hubbard, and had been one of Travolta’s dream projects since the book was first released in 1982, after Hubbard personally wrote to him to ask for help making a film adaption of the novel.
