This holiday season just got a lot merrier, thanks to Jimmy Fallon and two of his very talented friends – Ariana Grande and Megan Thee Stallion. The Tonight Show host, dropped a new holiday tune, “It Was A… (Masked Christmas)” featuring Megan Thee Stallion and Ariana Grande.
The music video for “It Was A… (Masked Christmas)” premiered on December 6 on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon. “It’s basically about like how last year was just rough on everybody,” Fallon said while introducing the song on his late night show. “And you know, I just wanted to say, it’s going to get better. It really is going to get better, trust me.”
Earlier on Monday, Fallon teased the pandemic-themed song on social media“Guys. I can’t believe I’m typing this but – I’m dropping a new single and video tonight with @ArianaGrande and @theestallion,” Fallon excitedly tweeted. Grande replied, “The most fun ever. love you !!! both so much @theestallion,” while Megan responded with a simple “Love y’all” and heart-eyed emojis.
In the music video directed by Dan Opsal, Fallon appears along with Ariana Grande and Megan Thee Stallion as they sing about masking up their noses and mouths and only getting Wi-Fi for zoom calls from the laundry room. Megan also raps about putting Purell on everything from Turkey to candy canes.

The video shows Grande and Fallon standing in line waiting for their shots, while Fallon sings “It’s Christmas time, we’ll be in line for a booster.” Stallion was also seen in the clip, rocking a nurse’s uniform and vaccine syringes on her fingers. The rest of the music video shows the three celebs in the holiday spirits as they are seen skiing in the snow, along with shots of talking masks.
Sharing the video on his Instagram account, Jimmy wrote, “This is the best present I’m going to receive all year!! Thank you to my besties @arianagrande and @theestallion.”
“It Was A… (Masked Christmas)” will be Megan’s first Christmas-themed track, while Grande has previously recorded multiple holiday tracks including 2013’s Christmas Kisses and 2015’s Christmas & Chill – and in 2019, she joined Idina Menzel for “A Hand for Mrs. Claus,” off of Christmas: A Season of Love. The following year, Ariana teamed with Mariah and Jennifer Hudson for “Oh Santa!”, a song from the Mariah Carey’s Magical Christmas Special Soundtrack. Grande’s most notable holiday track, “Santa Tell Me,” peaked at No. 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 earlier this year in January.
In fact, Grande most recently collaborated on a Christmas track with Kelly Clarkson for a cover of “Santa, Can’t You Hear Me.”
Fallon, meanwhile, has been involved in at least two prior holiday tunes. In 2017, he covered Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmastime,” welcoming back the former Beatle along with The Roots on the track; and in 2010, Fallon released the song “Drunk on Christmas,” which featured John Rich.
