Early Life

Jennifer Garner was born in Houston, Texas, on April 17, 1972. Her father, William John Garner, was a chemical engineer, and her mother, Patricia Ann Garner, was a stay-at-home mother who later became a college English teacher. Garner moved to Charleston, West Virginia, with her parents and two sisters when she was three years old. She was raised in a religious family, attending a local Methodist church on Sundays and Vacation Bible School during the summer. It was forbidden for teenagers to wear cosmetics, paint their nails, pierce their ears, or color their hair.

After graduating from George Washington High School in 1990, Garner enrolled at Denison University in Granville, Ohio. She switched from chemistry to theater after three years and spent the autumn semester of 1993 at the National Theater Institute in Waterford, Connecticut. In 1994, she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in theater and relocated to New York City to pursue acting.

Career

Garner relocated to Los Angeles in 1997 after earning some minor roles in various miniseries after college. In the TV movie “Rose Hill,” she got her first main part, and in the historical drama “Washington Square,” she got her first feature picture role. She appeared in Woody Allen’s film “Deconstructing Harry,” however the most of her performance was deleted from the final cut.

In 1998, Garner landed her most prominent part yet in J.J. Abram’s popular college drama “Felicity.” She appeared in tiny roles in big-budget films such as “Dude, Where’s My Car?” in 2000 and the war epic “Pearl Harbor” in 2001.

When Garner featured as Sydney Bristow on ABC’s “Alias” in 2001, it marked a watershed moment in her career. The part was written just for her by J.J. Abrams, the show’s creator. “Alias” ran for five seasons, with Garner’s compensation gradually increasing until it reached $150,000 per episode by the end.

The production was well-received by both spectators and reviewers, and Garner’s performance earned her several award nominations and victories.

She continued to work in cinema on a part-time basis while working on “Alias.” Steven Spielberg personally phoned her to give her a tiny role in 2002’s “Catch Me if You Can” after being blown away by her performance in “Alias.”

Her first co-starring picture role was in 2003’s “Daredevil,” with Ben Affleck. In 2004, she landed her first big part in the critically acclaimed romantic comedy “13 Going on 30.” Garner has been acclaimed for her effortlessly charming depiction of main character Jenna in the film, which made $96 million worldwide.

Garner returned to work in 2007 with the massive smash “Juno,” a film by Diablo Cody and Jason Reitman, after a one-year hiatus after “Alias” ended. Her portrayal of Vanessa, a lady anxious to adopt a child, was brilliant and well-received.

She continued to work in romantic comedies, such as 2009’s “The Invention of Lying,” in which she starred opposite Ricky Gervais in his directorial debut, earning plaudits for her impeccable comedic timing once again.

Garner had her first appearance as a mother in the 2012 movie “The Odd Life of Timothy Green,” in which she co-starred with Joel Edgerton. The film was a minor box office success and received mixed reviews.

Garner starred alongside Matthew McConaughey in the 2013 film Dallas Buyer’s Club, in which she played a doctor who treated Texas AIDS patients in the 1980s. She was acclaimed by critics and fans alike for her compassionate and emotional performance once again.

Throughout the 2010s, Garner continued to improve her acting skills and appeared in prominent parts on and off. She is frequently lauded for her ability to emotionally and humorously connect with audiences. Garner received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in August 2018. She will feature in Yes Day, a Netflix comedy directed by Miguel Arteta, which will be released in 2019.

From 2000 until 2004, Jennifer Garner was married to actor Scott Foley. In 1998, they met on the set of Felicity. From 2005 until 2015, she was married to Ben Affleck, an actor, producer, and director whom she met on the set of Pearl Harbor. On June 30, 2015, Garner and Affleck, who have three children together, announced their separation. In October of 2018, their divorce was completed.
