Early Life

Jeffrey Bruce Atkins popularly known as Ja Rule was born on February 29, 1976 to Debra and Will Atkins. He was raised in the neighborhood of Hollis in Queens, New York. His father left home when Jeffrey was very young. His mother was a healthcare worker and owing to her work schedule he spent most of his time with his grand parents. Ja Rule’s grandparents were Jehovah’s Witnesses and he started practicing the religion also.

He left the religion at age 12 and began selling drugs in Hollis. He got into a lot of fights in school due to his small size. Ja Rule did not graduate but earned his GED in 2012 while in prison due to illegal activities.  In February 2021, he completed an online course at Harvard Business School.

Career

Ja Rule’s career started in 1994 as a member of the group Cash Money Click alongside members Chris Black and O-1. He changed his stage name to “Ja Rule” shortly after. The group produced a number of songs independently, including their debut single Get Tha Fortune in 1994. Later they were signed by TVT records and plans for releasing their debut studio album were in talks but the group was dropped from their label due to the arrest and imprisonment of group member Chris Black. Eventually the group disbanded after just one year.

Ja Rule’s made his first solo appearance in 1995 with the song Time to Build by Mic Geronimo, which also featured Jay-Z and DMX. He also appeared on the song Usual Suspects from Mic Geronimo’s second album Vendetta in 1997 and had a brief cameo in the video for Walk In New York by Queens’ hardcore rap group Onyx. Later Ja Rule was signed as the flagship artist for Irv Gotti’s Murder Inc. Records. In 1998 he appeared on Jay-Z’s 1998 hit single “Can I Get A…”, for which he wrote the hook.

Ja Rule’s debut single Holla Holla was released in March, 1999 which became a huge hit peaking at number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart followed by His debut studio album Venni Vetti Vecci in June 1999. The album peaked at number 3 on the Billboard 200 selling around 184,000 copies in its first week. It later acquired platinum status in the US. Ja Rule’s second studio album, Rule 3:36 debut at number 1 on the Billboard 200, in October, 2000, making it his first number one album. The album was certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and featured his hit singles including Between Me and You, featuring Christina Milian and Put It on Me, featuring Vita and Lil’ Mo.

The same success was received by his third studio album  Pain Is Love which included three top 10 singles, two of them reaching number 1. The first single from the album,  Livin’ It Up, featuring Case, was released in July 2001, which reached number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was followed by the second single Always on Time in October 2001 which featured Murder Inc’s youngest artist Ashanti. The single became both Ja Rule and Ashanti’s first song to top the Billboard Hot 100. A remix version of Jennifer Lopez’s single I’m Real featuring Ja Rule was also included on the album and topped the Billboard Hot 100 for five non-consecutive weeks. The album’s fourth single track Down Ass Bitch featuring Charli Baltimore als reached number 21 on the Hot 100.

His fourth album The Last Temptation was released in November, 2002 which debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, and spawned two hit singles, Thug Lovin, featuring Bobby Brown and Mesmerize, a duet with Ashanti. The album  was certified platinum by the RIAA in December 2002. After the release of his fourth album Ja Rule got involved in a feud with fellow Queens rapper 50 Cent. Both the artists kept on trading insults and diss tracks for a long time. The feud was highly publicized throughout 2003 and other rappers like 50 Cent’s labelmates  Eminem, Obie Trice, D12 and Ja Rule’s former friends and associates DMX and Busta Rhymes were also brought into it.

Ja Rule’s fifth studio album, Blood in My Eye, was released on November 4, 2003 and was described as a “hate” album directed at various rappers, including 50 Cent, G-Unit, Eminem, Proof, Dr. Dre, DMX, Busta Rhymes and others. The album gave one hit single, Clap Back, which reached #44 on the Billboard Hot 100 selling over 468,000 copies. His sixth album R.U.L.E., was released in November 2004. The album’s lead single Wonderful, featuring R. Kelly and Ashanti, peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 followed by the street anthem New York, featuring Fat Joe and Jadakiss, which charted at #27 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album sold 658,000 copies and was certified gold by the RIAA.

Ja Rule’s last project while in contract with Murder Inc., a greatest hits album titled Exodus was released in December,2005 after which he took a hiatus from recording music. After taking a long break his new album Pain is Love 2 was released in February 2012 and by that time, he was serving a two-year prison sentence for tax evasion and gun possession. He was released in May 2013.

After his release from prison, Ja Rule and Gotti relaunched Murder Inc Records. He also released a memoir in 2014 titled Unruly: The Highs and Lows of Becoming a Man  in which he recounted his past struggles, his breakout success and destructive rivalries to fatherhood and a two-year prison sentence.. He announced his eight studio album shortly after, but it was pushed back indefinitely. In December 2016, Ja Rule appeared on The Hamilton Mixtape, where he rapped Hamilton’s verse in Ashanit’s song Helpless. Ashanti confirmed in June 2018 that she and Ja Rule are collaborating on a new album.

Ja Rule is also an established actor and appeared in in several movies including Back in the Day with Ving Rhames and Pam Grier and Half Past Dead as Steven Seagal’s co-star. He also appeared in a minor role in The Fast and the Furious. He also starred in the movies The Cookout with Queen Latifah and Assault on Precinct 13. In 2013, he starred in I’m in Love with a Church Girl.

Additionally Ja Rule launched an urban clothing line called ErvinGeoffrey and also collaborated with footwear businessman Steve Madden on a new line of men’s sneakers called Maven x Madden.

In 2016, Ja Rule co-founded Fyre Media, Inc., a talent booking agency, with Billy McFarland. In April 2017, the venture’s Fyre Festival in Hamilton, Bahamas, which was touted as a luxury event became a huge failure, disappointing hundreds of ticket-buyers.  Ja Rule and McFarland faced a $100 million class action suit.

Personal Life & Relationships

Ja Rule has been married to Aisha Murray since April 2001. The couple has three children together, Brittney Asja Atkins (born 1995), Jeffrey Jr. (born 2000), and Jordan (born 2005).

Ja Rule was raised as a  Jehovah’s Witness for most of his childhood but now he identifies himself as a Christian. He was baptized along with his wife in 2013.
