Fred was an undergraduate student at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, but he struggled academically. He was instead known as a boozehound, a smoker, and a gambler. Pi Lambda Phi, one of two Jewish fraternities on campus, was his home. He met his future wife, Marilyn, at the University of Florida, where she was a member of the Jewish sorority Alpha Epsilon Phi. Marilyn had been married to Fred for 51 years when she died on February 6, 2011, leaving behind four children and seven grandkids.

Fred enrolled in the University of Florida College of Legal in 1958, mostly to avoid leaving the college party scene, and because his elder brother David had established a small law office where Fred could work. His grades were below the needed minimum 2.0 average, so he had to attend summer school to get into law school. Almost anybody could enroll on a Florida public law school in 1958, but only around one-third would graduate.

Fred learned during his first few weeks of law school that his brother Martin didn’t have long to live after succumbing to the latter stages of leukemia. Fred addressed the law school’s dean and requested a few days off from classes to attend his brother’s funeral. Fred’s undergraduate record was examined by the dean, who informed him that he could take the time off and that he didn’t need to return because he would never make it through law school.

Fred traveled from Gainesville to Pensacola, but he did not arrive in time to see his brother before he died. Fred ignored the dean’s advice and went to law school, where he excelled, placing third in his class. After law school, Fred planned to return to Pensacola and work with his brother for a year before returning to law school to get a master’s degree in tax law. He had no desire to practice law since he was frightened of public speaking.
