Early Life

Eric Clapton

Eric Clapton was born Eric Patrick Clapton in Ripley, Surrey, England on March 30, 1945. His mother, Patricia, was 16 years old at the time of his birth, and his father, Edward, was a 24-year-old Canadian soldier whom Eric had never met. Clapton was informed as a youngster that Patricia was his sister and that Eric’s parents were his mother and stepfather.

Patricia later married and relocated to Germany, leaving Clapton with his grandparents in England. Eric learned to play guitar as a youngster after getting one as a birthday present, and his abilities were so outstanding that by the age of 16, he was performing in bars with fellow musician Dave Brock.

Clapton joined the Roosters, a British R&B group, at the age of 17 and stayed with them until August 1963, when he joined Casey Jones & the Engineers. Clapton attended Kingston College of Art for one year before being expelled.

Career

Eric joined the Yardbirds in October 1963 and lasted with them until March 1965, departing on the day the band’s first big single, “For Your Love,” was released. Clapton joined John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers in April 1965, departed a few months later, returned in November, and then left again in July 1966.

Eric joined Cream after leaving the Bluesbreakers, and with them, he released six albums and numerous hit singles, including “Sunshine of Your Love” and “White Room,” until the band disintegrated in 1968. He founded Blind Faith with Steve Winwood, Ginger Baker, and Ric Grech the next year, but the band barely lasted seven months.

Clapton subsequently joined Derek and the Dominos, releasing “Layla” in 1970, which would go on to become one of his most successful songs; the band disintegrated in 1971 while recording their second album.

Eric assembled a touring band and recorded “461 Ocean Boulevard” in 1974, which featured his first #1 hit, a rendition of Bob Marley’s “I Shot the Sheriff.” In 1982, he took a sabbatical from music to go to rehab, and a few months after his release, he began writing on the album “Money and Cigarettes”.

In the 1980s, Clapton began composing film scores, winning a BAFTA Award for 1985’s “Edge of Darkness” score.

He was nominated for nine Grammy Awards in 1992, winning six of them (Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male, Best Rock Vocal Performance, Male, and Best Rock Song), and releasing the “Unplugged” album, which was certified Diamond after selling 10 million copies.

In 2000, Eric released “Riding with the King,” a collaboration with blues great B.B. King that charted at #1 on the US Top Blues Albums list and #3 on the “Billboard” 200; the album also received a Grammy for Best Traditional Blues Album.

Clapton has performed over 3,000 concerts in nearly 60 countries during his long career, and despite retiring from worldwide touring in 2015, he continues to make new music, and he recently celebrated his 70th birthday with shows at Madison Square Garden in New York City and the Royal Albert Hall in London.

Personal Life & Relationships

Pattie Boyd and Eric Clapton married in 1979. Despite being married, Eric and Yvonne Kelly had a daughter, Ruth Kelly Clapton. In 1988, he divorced Pattie. With Lory Del Santo, he has a son named Conor. In the year 2002, he married Melia McEnery. Sophie Belle, Ella May, and Julie Rose are the couple’s three kids.

Awards & Accolades

Clapton has been nominated for 37 Grammy Awards and has won 17 of them. In 2006, he was honored with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. He’s also won three American Music Awards, a BAFTA Award, two Billboard Music Awards, a GQ Award, four Ivor Novello Awards, an MTV Video Music Award, two Primetime Emmy Awards, and a slew of other accolades.

Eric received the Silver Clef Award from Princess Michael of Kent in 1983, and he was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2015. He earned a star on the Rock and Roll Walk in 2000 and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the Yardbirds in 1992, Cream in 1993, and as a solo artist in 2000.
