Florence Pugh breathed new life into another classic novel: The Little Girl Star is set as the lead role in an adaptation of East Eden on Netflix. Pugh would play Cathy Ames in the web series. The film’s writer and executive producer is Zoe Kazan. Grandfather of Zoe, Elia Kazan, directed a film adaptation of the 1955 novel. The film stars James Dean, Julie Harris, Raymond Massey, Richard Davalos and Jo Van Fleet. Jo Van Fleet won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for her role as Cathy. The novel also has many other adaptations.
The classic novel tells the story of two families: the Trasks and the Hamiltonians and their interrelationships between the beginning of the twentieth century and the end of the First World War. The Hamiltonians are believed to be based on the family of Steinbeck’s mother. Pugh was chosen as Cathy Ames, who grew up near the Trask family farm. In the novel, he burns down his family’s house and kills both of his parents.
