Early Life

Cynthia Rowley was born on 29 July 1958, in Barrington, Illinois USA to Ed Rowley, a former science teacher, and his wife, Clementine, who was a painter.

Rowley had an incredibly early introduction to the world of art and design, with her mother and grandparents all being artists. One of her grandparents designed the Pabst Blue Ribbon logo. Cynthia designed her first dress when she was only seven years old..

She attended Barrington High School and graduated in 1976. She earned her Bachelors degree in Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1981.

Career

After graduating in 1981, Rowley was awarded an SAIC fellowship, which enabled her to relocate from Chicago to New York City. She subsequently started to pursue her career in fashion and organize her own fashion shows with a seed money of $3000 which was given to her by her grandmother.

Rowley launched her first capsule collection in 1988, which has grown to include women’s wear, handbags, glasses, color cosmetics, fragrance, wetsuits and swimwear, home furnishings, bedding products, and office accessories partnering. Later, she also released the women’s secondary line called “Rowley by Cynthia Rowley”.

Rowley wasn’t satisfied with just creating clothing. She wanted to create a world full of whimsical and genuinely unique designs that would break up the bleak, mundane world around her. After establishing herself as a clothing designer, Rowley began designing accessories such as eyewear.

In late 2005, Rowley released her first line of eyewear with the support of B. Robinson and the Kenmark Group. Although her clothing and accessories are normally higher-end, she wanted to expand her dreamy designs into the lives of more people. To accomplish this goal, she teamed up with Target to create a line of home goods, styled in her iconic fun and colorful patterns.

She started doing more collaborative work too, and in 2009 it was reported that she would be redesigning the uniforms for United Airlines, however, the deal eventually fell off. She then started working on the menswear collection called “Mr. Powers” a limited menswear range named after her husband Bill Powers.

Cynthia’s work is presented bi-anually at the New York Fashion Week and her signature stores are present in New York City, Chicago, Montauk, Palm Beach, Malibu, Pacific Palisades, and Newport Beach. Her work can also be found at the company’s online store.

Rowley has also appeared in various television programs, mainly on fashion-related shows such as “America’s Next Top Model” and “Project Runway”. She’s also made guest appearances in various talk shows, including the “Late Show with David Letterman”, “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and “Good Morning America”. The television show “Return to Amish” also featured Rowley’s design company.

Cynthia has also written several books over the course of her career which includes Swell Holiday: Turning Up the Twinkle, The Swell Dressed Party, Home Swell Home, Swell: A Girl’s Guide to the Good Life, Slim: A Fantasy Memoir, among others.

Rowley’s first husband was photographer Tom Sullivan, who died of brain cancer at the age of 32 in 1994. Then Rowley married William Keenan Jr., a Brooklyn sculptor in 1996, with whom she has a daughter, Kit Clementine Keenan (1999). Keenan released her own line of clothing in 2018, titled KIT. In 2019 Cynthia and her daughter created a podcast together called Ageless. Kit rose to global prominence after starring on the reality show “The Bachelor” in 2021.
