Early Life
Billy Porter was born on September 21, 1969 to William E. Porter and Cloerinda Jean Johnson Porter Ford in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He grew up alongside his siter in a religious Pentecostal household. Potter had once opened up about being sexually abused as a kid by his step-father.
Porter attended the Reizenstein Middle School and Allderdice High School, and graduated in 1987 from the Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts School. During his summer holidays Porter used to perform daily at Kennywood, an amusement park in Pittsburgh, as part of the entertainment groups “Spirit” and “Flash.”
Porter later obtained a Bachelors degree in Fine Arts and drama from the College of Fine Arts at Carnegie Mellon University. He also completed a graduate-level Professional Program in Screenwriting from UCLA.
Career
In 1992 Porter appeared on a Talent Show Star Search and won $100000. He then played Teen Angel in the 1994 Broadway revival of Grease. It was followed by several other shows including Topdog/Underdog at City Theatre (2004), Jesus Christ Superstar and Dreamgirls at Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera (2004), and the song cycles Myths and Hymns and Songs for a New World (Off-Broadway, 1995).
In February 2005, Porter wrote and performed in his one-person autobiographical show, Ghetto Superstar (The Man That I Am) at Joe’s Pub in New York City. Then, in September 2010, Porter appeared as Belize in Tony Krushner’s “Angels In America.”
Porter’s most notable broadway performance was in the 2013 show “Kinky Boots” in which he played Lola. The actor was highly appreciated equally by public and critics, for his work. He also appeared in several films, including his role of a drag queen in the 2017 film “Twisted” which was an adaptation of Oliver Twist.
Porter also had a brief musical career during which he released three solo albums, namely, Billy Porter(1997) on DV8/A&M Records, At the Corner of Broadway + Soul (2005) on Sh-K-Boom Records and Billy’s Back on Broadway (Concord Music Group) in 2014. He also featured in a number of songs in the tribute album; It’s Only Life: The Songs of John Bucchino in 2006 and also recorded a cover of Only One Road that was included on the Human Rights Campaign compilation album Love Rocks.
In April 2017 Porter released Billy Porter Presents the Soul of Richard Rodgers which featured soulful renditions of classic and Richard Rodgers songs and also included solo and duet performances from other award winning artists.
In 2018 Porter had recurring roles on the TV series Pose as Pray Tell and American Horror Story as Behold Chablis. In 2019 he also had a cameo appearance in Taylor Swift’s “You Need to Calm Down” music video that featured twenty LGBTQ icons. His memoir titled, Unprotected was released in 2021.
Porter has also performed at various venues in New York city including the Lincoln Center and Joe’s Pub. In 2019 he also headlined London Pride, an annual LGBTQ pride festival.
Personal Life & Relationships
Porter publicly came out as being gay at the age of 16. He married his present husband, Adam Smith in 2009 and the couple tied the knot in January 2017.
In May 2021, Porter in an interview, announced that he was diagnosed with HIV and type-II Diabetes in 2007. He also filed for bankruptcy in March 2007.
