Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch was born in Hammersmith, London, England, on July 19, 1976, and grew up in an acting household. Cumberbatch began attending boarding schools when he was eight years old, first at Brambletye School in West Sussex.
On an Arts scholarship, he moved on to the famed Harrow School, where he was part in several Shakespearean productions. When he was 12, he made his acting debut in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”
Cumberbatch took a gap year before college to serve at a Tibetan monastery in India as an English teacher.
