He attended West Chester East High School along with Сhrіѕ Rааb who is a television personality as well and dropped out after his junior year. He later worked to receive his GED.

Career

Film and Television Career

Bam used to shoot himself and friends skateboarding and doing stunts which eventually came to be known as CKY ( Camp Kill Yourself) video series. It was released independently by Margera followed by CKY2KCKY3 and CKY4 . Many of his friends including Ryan Dunn, Brandon DiCamillo, Rake Yohn, Chris Raab, and Brandon Novak featured in the videos and later formed a group and loose collective of people known as the CKY Crew.

With the success of CKY videos Margera caught the attention of Jeff Tremaine, the editor of skateboarding magazine Big Brother who drafted Margera into the team which eventually became the center of MTV’s Jackass reality series, with other CKY crew members playing supporting roles on the show to varying degrees. From October 2000 to February 2002 Margera was a central castmate on Jackass. He also appeared in subsequent projects in the Jackass franchise including Jackass: The Movie (2002), Jackass Number Two (2006), Jackass 3D (2010), and Jackass 3.5 (2010). In 2003 Margera appeared in the film Grind, playing himself. The film also featured cameos by other Jackass members and professional skateboarders as well.

With the tremendous sucess of Jackass Margera got the opportunity to have his own television series titled Viva La Bam. The show ran for five seasons on MTV from 2003 to 2005 and was primarily filmed in his hometown of West Chester, centered around Margera and his crew performing various stunts and missions. Other locations included New Orleans, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles, and Margera even took his stunts abroad with the show filming in countries like Brazil, Finland, Mexico, and the Netherlands. When Margera got engaged in 2007, MTV filmed the show Bam’s Unholy Union as a follow-up to Viva La Bam. The main premise of the show was to follow Margera, his then-fiancée Melissa Rothstein, and their various friends in the time leading up to their wedding.

Other acting projects Margera has appeared in include a pornographic film by Gina Lynn, The Fantasstic Whores 4 (2008) in a ‘prominent, non-sex role’ alongside fellow CKY Crew member Brandon Novak. He also appeared in Nitro Circus in 2009. Other television appearances by Margera include a one-time half-hour Spike special Bam’s World Domination in 2010, and his appearance with his mother April Margera on the VH1 reality series Family Therapy with Dr. Jenn in March 2016, where they addressed his self-destructive behavior.

Skateboarding Career

Margera first began his career as a professional skateboarder in 1997 and 1998, when he was sponsored by Toy Machine Skateboards. In 2001 he joined Team Element, the demonstration team for Element Skateboards although he is no longer part of the team since 2016. Margera has effectively retired from skateboarding now, with no major sponsorships, although he still skates casually.

Other Projects and Pursuits

Apart from the Jackass franchise and other television projects, Margera has written, produced and starred in three independent films. The first film, Haggard (2003), was based on the real-life events in the life of his friend Ryan Dunn, with Dunn playing himself in the main role, and Margera playing the character of “Valo.” His second independent film Minghags (formerly titled “Kiss a Good Man’s Ass”), a loose sequel to Haggard, was released straight to DVD in December 2008 followed by the Christmas-themed movie Bam Margera Presents: Where the#$&% Is Santa?.

In November 2004, Margera  began a weekly radio show called Radio Bam that aired on the Sirius Radio Station from November 2004 to February 2013. The show initially featured Margera and his friends from the CKY and Jackass crews. Margera also tried his luck in music, starting his own music label Filthy Note Records in 2005. He has directed music videos for Clutch, Turbonegro, Viking Skull, and his brother’s band CKY. He also directed four music videos for the Finnish band HIM, and three for The 69 Eyes. Additionally, he played the keyboard in the novelty band Gnarkill, and was also in the band Fuckface Unstoppable which featured Margera, his brother, his girlfriend and Brandon Novak. The band’s debut album titled FFU was released in May 2014, through Artery Records and a deluxe edition of the album was released in August 2015, through Casual Madness.

Other projects he has been involved in include the release of a book with private writings and pictures, Serious as Dog Dirt (2009), and voicing a character in the video game Scarface: The World is Yours (2006). He is also an animated character in the Tony Hawk’s video game franchise.

Personal Life & Relationships

Margera was engaged to Jenn Rivell, who featured in many of his early projects, although the couple broke up in 2005 after being together for seven years. He even filed for legal protection from Rivell after she allegedly broke into his house.

He later got engaged to his childhood friend Melissa “Missy” Rothstein in 2006. Their wedding ceremony and other events were documented in the MTV series “Bam’s Unholy Union.” However their marriage didin’t work very well and the couple got divorced in November 2012.

A year later Margera married Nicole Boyd in Iceland on October 5, 2013. The couple welcomed a baby boy in December 2017 whom they have named Pheonix Wolf.
