Early Life

Alex Honnold Net Worth

Alex Honnold was born in Sacramento, California, on August 17, 1985. His parents were also community college lecturers. He is of German descent on his father’s side, while on his mother’s side, he is of Polish ancestry.

Alex began rock climbing at a gym when he was five years old and showed his dedication to the sport by 10 when he was attending the gym several times a week.

He frequently won numerous rock climbing events as a youth. After graduating from Mira Loma High School in 2003, he enrolled at the University of California, Berkley, to study civil engineering.

His first year of college was tough for him. Instead of residing in the dormitories, he rented an apartment from a family acquaintance, which resulted in his not making many friends. In addition, to being secluded his first year, his parents were divorcing and his grandma died.

He routinely missed lectures and did not return to college after taking a semester off to train for the National Climbing Championships in Scotland. After graduating from high school, he spent his time climbing and driving throughout California in his mother’s minivan. When the minivan broke down, he rode his bicycle and tent. From 2004 through 2009, he claimed to have lived on less than $1,000 a month.

Career

Despite climbing in competitions for most of his life, he was relatively obscure even within the climbing community until roughly 2007. In the same year, he free soloed Astroman and Rostrum in Yosemite Valley, which climber Peter Croft duplicated in 1987.

Only after this achievement did he earn broad notoriety in the climbing world. The following year, he free soloed a 1,200-foot-tall finger crack that separates Zion’s Moonlight Buttress, and when this feat was announced, many assumed it was a prank due to the great difficulty of the climb the time of the announcement being April 1.

Later that year, Honnold free soloed Half Dome’s 2,000-foot-tall Regular Northwest Face in Yosemite, and in 2012, he set a new record for quickest ascent at one hour and twenty-two minutes.

By 2009, he had gained some notoriety in the climbing world and a three-year contract, but he was still largely unknown to the general public. He was awarded the Golden Piton Award for endurance rock climbing in 2010.

In 2011, he was recognized as one of the world’s most accomplished free solo rock climbers, and he was gaining attention outside of the climbing community. He was featured on the cover of National Geographic in May of 2011, and in the winter of the same year, he attempted to break the record for the quickest ascent of El Capitan but fell short by 45 seconds.

He garnered national attention in 2012 after appearing on “60 Minutes” to discuss his free solo climb of Half Dome’s Regular Northwest Face, and he was included in the documentary climbing film “Alone on the Wall.”

In June of that year, he and fellow climber Hans Florine attempted to beat the record for the quickest ascent of El Capitan once more, and they succeeded, setting a new form of 2 hours, 23 minutes, and 46 seconds.

In 2014, Honnold and many other climbers were featured in “Valley Uprising,” a documentary on the growth of rock climbing in Yosemite Park, and Cliff Bar was one of the film’s financial sponsors as well as having sponsorship arrangements with five of those in the movie, including Honnold.

Cliff Bar, however, canceled sponsorship ties with the professional climbers featured in the video a few months after its premiere. They indicated that they opted to do so because the corporation was concerned about how far the climbers were pushing the sport’s boundaries and taking excessive risks. Honnold is well-known for taking great risks while remaining unconcerned about his own life and safety.

Honnold achieved the first free solo climb of El Capitan on June 3, 2017, via the 2,900-foot Freerider route. He finished the ascent in 3 hours and 56 minutes, characterized as one of the most amazing athletic accomplishments ever.

Climber and photographer Jimmy Chin and his wife documentary filmmaker Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi captured it, and the documentary film “Free Solo” was published in 2018. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature that year.

Personal Life & Relationships

Honnold met Sanndi McCandless during a book event in 2015, and the two became engaged in late 2019. They plan to marry in September of 2020. Their connection was a central theme in the documentary “Free Solo.” In 2012, he began donating one-third of his salary to solar projects to boost the global energy supply.

He extended this into the Honnold Foundation, a non-profit that promotes and supports solar energy in emerging countries. Honnold’s mother, Dierdre Wolownick, was the oldest woman to complete El Capitan at sixty-six.
