After 15 years of marriage, Indian superstar Aamir Khan and his wife, director and producer Kiran Rao, announced their divorce on Saturday.
Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao announced in a joint statement that they aim to raise their son Azad together and continue to collaborate on films, their co-owned nonprofit Paani Foundation, and other projects.
“We began a planned separation some time ago, and now feel comfortable to formalise this arrangement, of living separately yet sharing our lives the way an extended family does,” the statement stated.
“Now we would like to begin a new chapter in our lives — no longer as husband and wife, but as co-parents and family for each other.”
Khan, who has two children from a previous marriage, is one of Bollywood’s highest-grossing stars. Aside from India, he has a sizable fan base in China, the world’s second-largest film market.
Rao is an acclaimed film director, producer and screenwriter.
They met on the filming of the Oscar-nominated film Lagaan in 2001 and married in 2005. They co-founded the Paani Foundation in 2016, a non-profit fighting drought in Maharashtra’s western state.
“In these 15 beautiful years together we have shared a lifetime of experiences, joy and laughter, and our relationship has only grown in trust, respect and love,” the statement continued.
